Custom solutions within Pythagoras: how Verhelst Aannemingen gains insight into underground data
For contractors active in road construction and infrastructure works, insight into the underground situation is crucial. Which cables and pipelines are present? At what depth? And do the available plans actually match the reality on site?
For Verhelst Aannemingen, a contractor specialized in road and sewerage works, this was exactly the challenge.
The challenge: from raw data to clear insight
When constructing new sewerage and infrastructure, Verhelst Aannemingen first needs a clear understanding of the existing situation. Information about cables and pipelines is collected from various sources: public databases, KLIP/KLIM notifications, and internal records.
This data was already being maintained internally in Excel, but in practice this proved far from ideal. During site meetings and consultations, it was difficult to quickly gain an overview or clearly explain potential conflicts.
The question to Pythagoras was therefore straightforward:
could this data be visualized clearly and intuitively, in a way that fits their workflow?
A tailored solution
Together with Verhelst Aannemingen, an initial joint session was organized to clearly define their expectations. This led to a solution built in two phases:
- Phase 1: visualization of all available underground data based on existing information sources. Cables, pipelines, and their estimated positions are displayed graphically in a clear cross-section.
- Phase 2: enrichment with data from trial trenches and test excavations, resulting in an accurate representation of the real situation. This phase also includes clash detection, making it immediately clear where potential conflicts with the planned new sewerage may occur and where adjustments are required.

For Verhelst, this approach represents a significant improvement:
- faster insight into complex underground situations
- better preparation of construction works
- clear visualizations during meetings and consultations
- reduced risks during execution
Moreover, the custom solution ensured that Pythagoras continued to fit seamlessly within Verhelst’s existing workflow. This was a decisive factor in their decision to keep working with Pythagoras.

Custom development is not a standard trajectory within Pythagoras, but it is considered when it clearly adds value for the customer. In this project, colleague Koen Truijen acted as the link between Verhelst Aannemingen and the development team, with the goal of delivering a sustainable and future-oriented solution.
